A vast and impressive crater in open farm-land, left by a tremendous explosion in the opening moments of the Battle of the Somme. From tunnels dug secretly for hundreds of metres beneath the fields, the final chamber was packed with explosives and detonated just ahead of the battle’s initial attack.
