Lyning astride the main Albert-Bapaume road, Pozières was a designated target for the first day’s advance in the Battle of the Somme, but did not fall until the end of the month.
The remains of a German blockhouse , known as « Gibraltar » still recalls the bitter fighting of the summer of 1916, two memorials commemorate the Australian troops’ first attacking engagement, and the Tank Corps Memorial has four smale-scale tanks at its corner.
